Traditions and Secrets Tours Itinerary

TRADITIONS AND SECRETS TOURS try to share some of the UNIQUE EXPERIENCES still practised by Remote village community of Sri Lanka. The TRADITIONS captured by us will be shared with the real SECRETS behind these traditions to understand How, why and when these traditions were added to the community and how these TRADITIONS still protect the local community without any harm or how these practises help the community to accept, acknowledge and move forward without getting affected by the incidents or un expected issues affecting them.

Itinerary 1- Snake God and snake bite treatments

Time Activity
8.30 am to 9.30 am Visiting to the Traditional snake God temple and observing praying and offering rituals.
9.30 am to 10.30 am Visiting two treatment places which give free treatment to affected individuals.
  • Using herbal leaves and mantra
  • Using a special variety of stone and meeting with rescued individuals and the traditional doctors who treat snake bite.
(stories, way of identifying the snake which bite the patient, how to cure using herbal leaves and other aspects can be found in this tour)
10.30 am to 12.30 pm Visiting herbal garden and explore more about how to keep houses with out Snake coming to places and other techniques including having special root of a herbal tree to get away from snake related problems and hearing to snake god prayers and songs.
12.30 pm Back to hotel in Batticaloa or Passikudah

Itinerary 2 – Offering activities and believes

Time Activity
7.30 am to 8.30 am Visiting to the Traditional temple which is famous for different kind of offering activities (having vegetarian food is a must if you wanted to go and experience the offering activities)
8.30 am to 09.30 am Briefing about the event and how to respect the activity. Observing the initiation of the activity.
  • Activity 1: Kaavadi
    It is a ceremonial sacrifice and offering practiced by devotees. On the day of the festival, devotees undertake a pilgrimage along a set route while engaging in various acts of devotion, notably carrying various types of kavadi (burdens). At its simplest this may entail carrying a pot of milk (pal kavadi), but piercing the skin, tongue or cheeks with vel skewers is also common. Some instance they decide to hand themselves too.
  • Activity 2: Waking on fire/fire threading
    In this event more than thousands of devotees attended. Pouring turmeric water on the body, the devotees performed the scared “Walking on the Fire” event. This will happen during May to July.
Based on the days this time can be confirmed.
10.30 am to 12.30 pm Discussion with the devotee about his/her feeling and why that person do this and try to understand the usefulness of this kind of annual scarification to boost their own energy.
12.30 pm Back to hotel in Batticaloa or Passikudah
